What is the difference between a smart watch and a smart bracelet?

Smart industry is a real hit in the consumer basket of the modern buyer. This is now observed not only among wealthy customers in foreign technology stores, but also in our country, on native land in Bulgaria. We have robotic smart vacuum cleaners and even appliances that work with voice assistants to control them remotely, including through an app to install on your own phone. But this whole smart wave, we must admit, started not only with the smartphone of Steve Jobs, but also with the so-called smart accessories for the hand. Of course, we are talking about the smart watch and the smart bracelet here.

In practice, the two sound like the same thing, but referred to by different names, and perhaps in different contexts. To some extent this is true, but not entirely. In fact, the standard application of the smartwatch and the smart bracelet introduces them to the industry in one context, namely that of a healthy and active lifestyle. But with the advancement of technology, most of the smart devices acquire more and more new functionalities. A similar development unmentionably did not miss smartwatches. Today, they contain a huge amount of the basic goodies of modern mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets. However, is this the case with smart bracelets? Actually not. This is where the main difference between a smart bracelet and a smart watch comes from - the range of their functionalities, with watches having an advantage.

At the same time, before we clarify what exactly are the dividing lines between the smart bracelet and the smart watch, it is appropriate to trace something else. Namely:

Is a smart bracelet and a fitness bracelet the same thing?

No, it's not the same. And to make things even clearer and more specific, we immediately note the following: a fitness tracker is also not equal to a smart bracelet or a fitness bracelet. But let us trace the differences in question one by one.

First, the fitness bracelet is far less functional than the smart bracelet. However, they are similar in that they are intended for relatively the same audience, namely people who exercise and generally follow some set of rules for a healthy lifestyle. The smart option is more functional because it is smarter, that is, it has more extras. By itself, the fitness bracelet most often contains the following features: it shows the time and date, the number of steps you took for the day, how much and how much you slept today, what is the calorie count for the day, and also gives you signals to move more today.

With smart bracelets, however, we have a much larger set of functions. Among those listed, we also mention the possibility to see who is calling and texting you on your mobile phone. Newer models also allow you to reply to messages, but not quite directly, that is, not in real time. Smart bracelets can pre-load response templates to send. Another additional option in the smart bracelet that you can't get in the fitness bracelet is the chance to control music software, the audio of which you get on your phone. Smart bracelets also have a built-in system for measuring health indicators - blood pressure, heart rate monitor and others. You can't get such a smart function from a fitness bracelet. Last but not least, some smart bracelets now also have a built-in GPS system. And this is something you cannot expect from a fitness bracelet.

Where is the role of said fitness tracker? It essentially resembles a fitness bracelet. The difference is that the tracker is another type of accessory. The fitness tracker is most often not worn on the arm, but is a chip in the form of a medallion, brooch and other object. In other words, the tracker does not have a display where you can see your health indicators, the steps you take for the day. All the information is collected in the tracker, but it is displayed by transmitting data on a mobile device, which can be both your phone and your smart watch.

And yet - where is the dividing line between a smart bracelet and a smart watch?

Now that we have established the difference between fitness and smart bracelet, it is time to see what is the difference between the two smart devices, the bracelet and the watch. It is clear that here both are offered as construction and design in the form of accessories. Due to most of its functions (as we have already specified above), the smartwatch has larger dimensions, therefore a larger display. Usually, the weight between the two gadgets is also a significant difference, naturally in favor of the watch.

But what exactly are the functional differences between a smartwatch and a smart bracelet? Since the smart and digital industry is literally changing at the speed of light, we list the differences available at the time of writing this material, that is, the beginning of the year 2022:

  • First, in 90% of cases, the smart watch has all the functions of the smart bracelet. Therefore, it has the functionality of both a fitness bracelet and a digital watch, but also some of the extras of a classic smart device, such as phones and tablets.
  • Second, the smart watch includes a number of functions of classic smart devices that cannot be seen in the smart bracelet. These are: 100% symbiosis with your phone and tablet, connection to social networks and the ability to respond when notifications and messages are sent to your phone, as well as manage a number of applications in the same.
  • Third, due to its higher degree of functionality, it is quite natural for a smartwatch to be much more expensive than a smart bracelet. Very often, the price of a smartwatch is set in the middle between that of a smart bracelet and your mobile phone or tablet.

What should I choose – a smart bracelet or a smart watch?

Of course, in this case, you should consider a number of important factors. For starters, it's the budget you have. Another important factor is to consider what you will be using the device for. If you're just looking for a way to track your sports performance and activity throughout the day as part of your pursuit of a healthy lifestyle, you probably don't really need a smartwatch. In this regard, your budget will determine what you can afford: a fitness bracelet, a fitness tracker or a smart bracelet. However, if you expect more functionalities and have the means to afford them, bet on a smartwatch. The latter is often already preferred not only by fitness enthusiasts, but also by dynamic people who are constantly on the move and perform one or other tasks, including professional ones, through their mobile devices. In addition, we will note that working on the touch screen is significantly easier through a smart watch due to the larger dimensions compared to those of the smart bracelet. This often makes people with bigger and thicker fingers, as well as the elderly, opt for a smartwatch over a smart bracelet.

No matter what you decide on - a smart bracelet or a watch - consider all their differences and choose the gadget that best suits your needs, budget and preferences.
